Quick Fix: HDMI Not Working? Try These 6 Checks

Quick Fix: HDMI Not Working? Try These 6 Checks

If your HDMI suddenly stops working—no signal, black screen, flickering, or the monitor isn’t detected—don’t panic. Most HDMI issues are simple connection, input, or adapter problems you can fix in minutes.

Try these 6 checks in order (fastest → most common fixes).

1) Check the monitor input (most common)

Your monitor/TV may be on the wrong input.

  • Use the monitor remote/buttons to select the correct source:
    HDMI 1 / HDMI 2 / HDMI 3

  • If you have multiple HDMI ports, try a different one.

✅ If the monitor shows “No Signal,” this is the first thing to check.

2) Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable

Unplug HDMI from:

  • your laptop/dock/hub

  • the monitor/TV

Then plug it in firmly again.

✅ Tip: HDMI can feel “in” but still not be fully seated.

3) Try a different HDMI cable (or shorter cable)

A failing cable is a top cause of flickering or random dropouts.

Quick test:

  • swap to another HDMI cable

  • if possible, try a shorter one for stability

✅ If the problem changes (flicker becomes stable or vice versa), it’s likely the cable.

4) If you’re using an adapter or hub, simplify the chain

Many HDMI problems come from too many “hops.”

Common chain problems:

  • adapter → hub → HDMI

  • hub → HDMI → converter

  • long cable + cheap adapter

Fix:

  • connect HDMI directly to your laptop if possible

  • if your laptop is USB-C only, try:

    • a different USB-C hub

    • or a dedicated USB-C to HDMI adapter

✅ Fewer hops = more stable.

5) Restart + “wake” the display properly

Sometimes the display handshake gets stuck.

Try:

  1. turn monitor off, wait 10 seconds, turn on

  2. restart your laptop

  3. unplug/replug HDMI after restart

✅ This resets the signal handshake.

6) Force your computer to detect the display

Sometimes the screen is connected but not recognized.

  • Mac: System Settings → Displays → (hold Option) Detect Displays (if shown)

  • Windows: Settings → System → Display → Detect / or press Windows + P and choose “Extend”

✅ If your computer detects it after this, the issue is usually a handshake or settings problem.

If it still doesn’t work (quick diagnosis)

  • Works with a different cable? → cable issue

  • Works with a different port? → port/input issue

  • Works when plugged directly (no hub)? → hub/adapter issue

  • Works on a different monitor? → monitor issue

  • Works on a different laptop? → laptop port issue
